5 Simple Tips to Boost Your Home WiFi Speed
If your internet feels slower than it should, the issue isn't always your broadband plan — often, it's how your WiFi router is set up at home. Before considering an upgrade, try these five simple fixes.
1. Move Your Router to a Central, Elevated Spot
WiFi signals weaken as they pass through walls, furniture, and floors. Placing your router in a central location, ideally elevated and away from metal objects or large appliances, helps it reach every room more evenly.
2. Reduce Interference from Other Devices
Microwaves, cordless phones, and even neighboring WiFi networks can interfere with your signal, especially on the 2.4GHz band. Switching your router to a less congested channel, or using the 5GHz band for devices close to the router, can noticeably improve speed.
3. Restart Your Router Regularly
Routers, like any device, can slow down after running continuously for weeks. A simple restart every so often clears temporary glitches and keeps performance consistent.
4. Use a Wired Connection for Stationary Devices
For devices that don't move — like a smart TV, desktop computer, or gaming console — connecting via an ethernet cable instead of WiFi gives a faster, more stable connection and frees up wireless bandwidth for everything else.
5. Check How Many Devices Are Connected
Every connected device shares your available bandwidth. If your household has grown to many devices streaming or downloading at once, it may genuinely be time to consider a higher-speed plan rather than a router tweak.
